Blogoshpere Props: TWILIGHT BEAUTY

August 21st, 2009

In search of reading the latest haps in our twitter and blogging community, one of our friends recently posted this news, inspired from the Women’s Wear Daily article, that we thought was too good we had to post it here, too!

The Twilight camp has teamed up with an LA beauty firm, the same folks who recently acquired DuWop AND Lola to name names, to launch a make up line, including 2 called Luna Twilight and Volutri Twilight. Our friend, Temptalia, brought up this WWD article to question ask a good point….would you support something so mainstream that has already made millions (possibly billions) of dollars off our our recession suffering nation? OK! Those were more our words and interpretation of her blog post, but it’s that’s what we got out of it.

On the other hand, when times are tough, don’t you think that it is the little things like Volturi make up that bring a smile to our face. It’s so random and fun that we temporarily forget that our economy might be suffering from this financial turmoil for decades more to come. So, why not put on a happy face and sometimes focus on the happy things to help get through those tough times?

We think it’s “worse” when mega Fashion Houses reach out of their realm and step into the make up world and use their established brand to expand industries. Why don’t they, those Mega Fashion Homes, do what they do best and design brilliant clothes, rather than think they can do it all. HA!

Funny I say this as my guilty pleasure lip gloss is made by Chanel. I only say guilty as no matter how strapped I am for cash, I always  find a few shiny coins to refill my favorite Chanel Lip Glossimer Gloss (and now they want to introduce more delicious make up delights –

CRÈME GLOSS LUMIÈRE STYLO BRILLIANCE LEVRES BRUSH-ON CRÈME LIP COLOUR). Then, again, those Mega Fashion Houses could do what the House of Louis Vuitton did and re-brand their make up business. Did you know Louis Vuitton owns Sephora?

Eye love you!

DH-ELEyes are the window to your soul. Eyes we use to see with. Eyes if accessorized properly can be your entire focus of your make-up regime for the day/eveining (smokey eye looks for the evening or the i-just-woke-up-snow-angel look for all day and night — tips on how to create those look later).

BLINC-Mascara_dark-brownHave you noticed that a good eyeliner paired with the perfect mascara can make your eyes pop that you don’t even need to focus on applying make-up on the rest of your face? I only say this as there are days that I run out of time (or am just having a lazy day) to do make-up and found this less is more approach does work and still looks great. Test it out on a day you know you’ll have a lot of down time and see how comfortable you get with this minimal look. Be sure to let us know what you think, too.

Out with the old, IN with the NEW

July 22nd, 2009

Like we just Tweeted — it’s TRUE! Bare Escentuals revamped their Get Started Kits. Yes, we know this is sort of old but new news….but we wanted to give you the low down [again].

Get Started KitsThe redesigned Kits still include a travel size (mini) of your favorite 2 shades of foundation, 1 mineral veil and warmth. And the redesigned Kits now include a few of their “new” foundation colors. This may be sad news for those who enjoyed the former Fairly Light/Light Kit as that Kit has been replaced by 2 different Kits (Fair Kit: Fair & Fairly Light and Light Kit: Light & Golden Medium foundation colors).

Brushes in the redesigned kits are almost all the same. Instead of a Kabuki Brush, you will get a nice long handle Full Flawless Face Brush. AND last but not least, the Skin Rev-er Upper has been replaced with a handy dandy brush conditioning “shampoo”. Tell us what you think of the new kits. Write us a review or comment on our blog.

Tah-tah for now.

Don’t forget your Sunblock!

July 15th, 2009

Summer---SunWhoever said that sunblock can only be worn and applied through thick messy lotions or creams was not very creative! Most Bare Escentuals mineral products include SPF including their latest addition of Bisque multi-tasking mineral (their concealer line). Dr. Hauschka’s SPF lip balm has been known to be used on the face. And we can’t forget to mention our favorite spray on Sunblock. That’s right spray on sunblock made just for the face.

Some of our loves (and most of them all-natural, bio-friendly & green of course!):

Recessionista & DIY Tip: Cleaning your Make Up Brushes

June 8th, 2009

We love all of the make up brush cleaners, conditioners and shampoo’s that we carry and use religiously. But a few of our college student clients have asked us, “How can we save a pretty penny on make up brush cleaners [they are just so darn expensive!]?” So today’s blog post is a tribute to all you college kids out there as we say, “Save that pretty penny to spend on a vacay during your summer out of school!!!!”

What it is: Make up cleaners come in all shapes and sizes to essentially do the same thing of cleaning your make up brushes. You have your spray cleaner that can temporarily clean away your make up (great for when you’re on the go or sharing your brush with a friend in need). There are foamy or gel shampoo types that wash your brush and take a day or so to completely dry out your brush. Then we have the wipes that look like face or baby wipes that work much like the sprays.

Recessionista Substitutes for Make Up Brush Cleaners, Conditioners…

  • The Wipes: Use what you have! If you like cleaning your make up brushes with make up brush specific wipes, then keep on trucking. Using your facial wipes and/or baby wipes to do the same trick.
  • The Spray: Honestly, we really don’t know how this stuff actually cleans anything. But a good do-it-yourself (DIY) substitute is adding water in a spray bottle with a sprinkle of Tea Tree oil. The smell will be potent as Tea Trea oil  has a very unique smell. But adding it is simply marvelous as Tea Tree oil works as a great antiseptic so it is a great thing to include in your first aid kit, medicine cabinet, cleaning cupboard….
  • The Gel-Type, Foaming-Up Cleaners: This stuff is wonderful if you decide to buy it especially made for cleaning Make Up brushes. However, we ask you this….why can’t you just use a facial cleanser or shampoo? We say, YOU CAN use facial cleanser and/or shampoo and stretch that dollar by not wasting it on Make Up Brush Cleaner!
  • Make Up Brush Conditioner: Some make up brushes are so delicate that they need conditioner to help preserve their longevity. Our recessionista tip is to just use your own hair conditioner.

VOILA pretty penny saved and mission accomplished (for us that is). Toodles until next time!

where is my MAKE UP?

June 4th, 2009

This is a bit off topic, considering our usual raves (and recent rant) on product reviews and ground breaking make up techniques. Yet, it is important, so attention all your blog readers.  :)

We’ve usually get a high frequency of emails and phone calls from customers regarding Highly-Demanded products that are out of stock. Or if you ever notice your favorite make-up item is out-of-stock or just plain ol’ missing, please feel free to shoot us an email or give us a ring on the phone. We truly love the efforts of communication our clients and customers provide and thoroughly encourage.

When the unfortunate occurs and we run out of stock of a product, we reorder it and try to have it back in stock within days. Sometimes the manufacturer is back-ordered (meaning their supply in their warehouse is out and they are waiting for more to be made). In the midst of all the waiting, we try to inform you as soon as possible and as often as possible of any updates on the product’s status.

And when we have an out-of-stock item or product that is back in-stock, we will let you know via personal email, phone call, blog, Twitter Tweet and/or Facebook update.

As always, feel free to let us know how we can improve this process (or any other of our processes) to improve your shopping experience.

On that note, HAPPY SHOPPING!

hopeless in a jar

June 3rd, 2009
As many of our trusty newsletter subscriber’s know, along with our newly designed website we are introducing skin care in the near future. To prepare for our skin care expansion, we have been testing all sorts of products (mostly, if not all, natural products).
O.P.P. (other’s people’s products – HA!): We hate bashing O.P.P. Yet, as we were asked by so many of you to start carrying Philosophy products, we started sniffing and testing the line. Our latest skin care “victim” is Hope in a Jar.
While I love the line, I, along with MOST of us here, do not understand the hype. Yes, it has a nice fluffy marshmallow like consistency that feels light and absorbs quickly into your skin. However, so do a lot of the other brands we’ve tried including, Hauschka, Pangea, Weleda (oops we are divulging too much on the top-secret items we will be introducing soon).
Back to the O.P.P. issue at hand: Hope in a Jar! In short, the product was good, not great. And for those of you out there in cyber-space who love skin care products that smell good, stay away from Hope in a Jar. Yes, I repeat, Hope in a Jar smells like straight Funk in a Jar. At first some of us thought it was just the batch we had, but after a few full size jars and various sample sized tubes we concluded that it smells funky fresh (gross!).
Had the chemical smell not been so pungent and awful, I would have felt more comfortable applying the cream on my face. And like they say, work is work and you have to pay the bills! Thus, I begrudgingly tested out this product and was satisfied that its smell had nothing to do with the positive moisturizing effects it did on my skin.

Pros:
-SPF: who doesn’t love SPF in their moisturizer. anything with SPF prevents sun damage that leads to wrinkles, sun spots and you can never have too much!
-fluffy light consistency goes well with make-up, other creams & serums as it absorbs quickly
-weight is great for summer as it has no oily feel/residue and do s not feel heavy on skin

Cons:
-chemical smell that lingers on your skin for a good 30 minutes, unless you apply another light light serum on top of it to mask the awful smell. two of the others who tested the product admits she spritzed perfume on her skin and he splashed an extra dose of after spray to subside the smell.
-volume: i forgot to mention earlier, that this stuff is so light and fluffy that this is not the type of cream/moisturizer where a little goes a long way. if i had to use this daily, i don’t think it would last me as long as the others we’ve tested because of the sheer volume you get in a jar.

Mineral Veil what?

May 7th, 2009

We just tweeted about some new updates on Bare Escentuals id BareMinerals Mineral Veil line — Feather Light Mineral Veil is now known as Illuminating Mineral Veil.

That then begged the question of “SO WHAT?” and “Why are there so many Mineral Veils?”
And now we give you the low down…

Color: Colorless and completely sheer
Benefits and Use: Like all mineral make-up, this versatile one can be worn alone to help control oily skin or to prime other make-up and/or skin-care that you are applying.

Benefits and Use: Adds an extra added level of depth to your skin and can be worn alone (used as foundation) or used to create a fake tan! Perfect to apply when you are in-between foundation colors, too.

Illuminating Mineral Veil Illuminating Mineral Veil:
Also known as: Feather Light Mineral Veil
Color: Colorless and completely sheer with a slight glimmer that leaves your skin with a luminous glow.
Benefits and Use: The ultimate make-up highlighter that goes on very super fine, leaving your skin looking natural with a matte finish and provides long-lasting coverage.

NEW Hydrating Mineral Veil

The 80’s are back

April 9th, 2009
Bold in-your-face colors are splashing everywhere: from bright hues of greens & blues eyeshadows on our eyes, yellow painted nails to hot pink kissable lips. Yet, out of them all, PURPLE is the trendiest color of the season.

Putting on purple is a tad intimidating at first, but not to dismay as a little can also go a long way. And why is it so trendy you ask? It’s not only a gorgeous hue of brilliant brightness, but a splash of it on your face can make the barest of skin come alive.

::..Our Purple Power make-up tip of the day..::
Dibble dabble any shade of purple (we like the metallic ones for an extra POP) on the top of your eyelids and don’t be shy to apply from your lash line up to your eye crease. Then for an extra bit of purple pizzaz, dip your finger or favorite eye-brush in that pot of purple eye-shadow and apply on the BOTTOM of your eyelids [YES, we said BOTTOM] from the inner corners to the middle.

You COULD apply to the entire bottom ends of your eyes when applying it on the bottom eyelids, but we think that look is more for the evening. And for an even more dramatic evening look, apply the Purple Pizzaz eyeshadow above your crease line (about half way up to your eye brow line). VOILA~
